Imbento Lang!

UnSilo Labs and Biomedical Devices

Dr. Ricky Guerrero shares how his collaborations in developing biomedical devices springs from his need to get out of the laboratory and put his knowledge, skills and experiences to solve problems that matter.

Dr. Ricardo Jose Sta. Maria Guerrero, or Doc Ricky, is a talented engineer with a passion for creating biomedical devices that meet the needs of the Philippines and other developing countries. After earning his PhD at the University of Edinburgh, where he developed microchip sensors to measure cancer tumor oxygen levels, Ricky returned to the Philippines to continue his impactful work.

Ricky's educational journey started at the Philippine Science High School - Main Campus and took him to the University of Waterloo in Canada, where he earned a degree in Nanotechnology Engineering. His research experience spans across prestigious institutions like the National Institute for Materials Science in Japan, MIT, and Safran Landing Systems, where he worked on various innovative projects.

Currently, Ricky is a Balik Scientist, and a Research Fellow at the Ateneo Research Institute for Science & Engineering (ARISE). He previously led a DOST-PCHRD funded project developing a microfluidic PCR device, which aims to make DNA testing more accessible and affordable to local scientists.

He is one of the minds behind Unsilo Labs, a team of toolmakers dedicated to empowering the Philippine biotechnology seen through the development of instruments and platform technologies, and synthesis of materials. He also currently advises the engineering arm of the Integrated Protein R&D Center (IPRDC) which is funded under the DOST Niche Centers in the Region (NICER) program.
